School, friends and sex in You Can See The Hills

You Can See The Hills

Word perfect: William Ash is a compelling performer

Look here too

It’s refreshing, sometimes, to be theatrically reminded of the richness of so-called normal life. In this charisma-stuffed one-man piece about a teenager growing up in 1980s Oldham, writer-director Matthew Dunster takes us on a rambunctious tour of parents, friends, sex, school and a lot more sex.

Deploying bouncy humour mixed with some sharp shocks of emotion, Dunster cleverly manages to blend the universal verities of teenagerdom with a compelling introduction to this particular young ladies’ man, Adam. William Ash is a hugely compelling performer, and is word perfect with the staggering 82 pages of script he’s had to learn.

Those 82 pages do, however, translate to a wildly indulgent two plus hours of stage time, and there are moments when we fear we might see Adam all the way to his pension. There’s a limit to how many of his sexual exploits we need in detail; by the umpteenth we’re doing the dramatic equivalent of lying back and thinking of England. The timescale is bewildering, as is the fact that Adam appears to be addressing us from a fashion shoot. Even so, it’s hard to stay cross with a play that praises the heyday of the malted milk biscuit.

Until 9 May. Information: 020 7922 2922, www.youngvic.org.
