Story falls flat in Dreamboats And Petticoats

Dreamboats And Petticoats

Dreamboats: Freeman and Biddell as Norman and Sue

Other reviews

Look here too

Ambitiously based on the track listing of a million-selling compilation of Fifties and Sixties hits, Dreamboats And Petticoats boasts toe-tapping tunes aplenty, yet ultimately buckles under their weight.

The simple plot sees teenager Bobby (X Factor’s Scott Bruton) ousted from the local band and the affections of sexpot Sue (Jennifer Biddell from Hollyoaks) by brash rocker Norman (Emmerdale’s Ben Freeman), before realising the value of substance in his geeky songwriting partner Laura.

There are some good jokes, but too often the dialogue is reduced to a series of song cues.

Daisy Wood-Davis, playing Laura, is a real find, but it falls to David Cardy as Bobby’s father to show the young ‘uns there’s more to song and dance than the right words and steps.

We saw this show in London yesterday, we weren't sure what to expect - It was great! the cast were fun and really looked as though they were enjoying themselves which transferred to the audience. The music was great, sung well and the storyline was so funny at times - I spent the first 10 minutes laughing hard! I'd recommend it to anyone! Well done to the cast!!

The best musical I've seen in years. I loved it and will go again with all the girls from work. The actors are really good and I loved the songs even though I hadn't heard most of them before. Hope it runs and runs.

What do these people expect Shakespeare. I attended last night and it was what it was - light hearted fun. There may not be critical aclaim, but again this shows the bridge between those that write the reviews and the people who pay to see the shows. If they had just stood outside when the audience came out, they would have seen the smiles on people's faces. If you want a good fun evening, without having to concentrate too much, this show at the Savoy will fit the bill.

- Ian, London

Great, feel good, fun entertainment. Full of energy and songs to sing along to. Thoroughly enjoyed!

- Nicola, London

I have seen the show and I think it's fantastic entertainment. The cast are very talented, the music is great and will have you dancing in the aisles by the end of the night. If you want a good night out with honest, great entertainment then this is THE show to see!

- Mw, durham

The Show is as weak and insubstantial as this tepid review, which reads as though the critic either was not there or left at the interval, or, of course, was so blinded by free drinks at the publicly closed off mezzanine bar of the Savoy theatre
