Much fun to be had at Pub Rock

There’s much fun to be had at the Lyric Hammersmith, where that ever-enterprising company Cartoon de Salvo has taken over the function room at the Hop Poles pub, directly across from the theatre. Here, in their new guise as magnificently named pub rockers One Trick Pony, the Salvos treat us to a gig with a difference.
Deconstructing the disintegrating dynamics of a long-established “function band” can only work if the four actors convince absolutely as skilled amateur rock and rollers. Thankfully they do, with lively Brian Logan pounding his keyboards in full Adam Ant regalia and Neil Haigh spot-on as the Thom Yorke-wannabe frustrated by his weekly diet of Brown-Eyed Girl and We Are Family.
Director Alex Murdoch, doubling as a lovelorn if nifty bass guitarist, could sharpen the focus in places and play up the idea that the Ponies view these pub bookings as the aural equivalent of Botox, preserving a sliver of freed youth while all else is kids and mortgages. Let’s hope they rock on.
Pub Rock until 20 February (0871 2211722, www.lyric.co.uk).

did the reviewer see the shambolic mess of a show that I saw. I mean, I sometimes go to shows based on reviews and this was one of the worst I've seen in a long time. I most certainly would never trust this woman's opinion again. It is quite shocking. One star as there is no way to give 0 stars, which is still far too many for my liking. I want my money back.
