Injury means painful end to Laura Robson’s reign

Laura Robson was forced to play through the pain of a back injury as she crashed out of the girl's singles in the third round.

Britain's 15-year-old defending champion, lost 6-2, 4-6, 8-6 to Quirine Lemoine of the Netherlands and was clearly hindered by her injury. Three times during the opening set she received three bouts of massage from a trainer.

In the second set Robson would often hold her back between points but, gritting her teeth, she saved two break points in the fifth game before breaking Lemoine in the 10th to take the set.

Both girls made crucial unforced errors in a tense decider and although Robson saved three match points her reign eventually came to an end after two hours and 17 minutes.

Lemoine now goes for a place in the semi-finals against sixth seed Timea Babos of Hungary, who earlier overcame Russia's Yana Buchina 7‑5, 6-1.

Britain's interest in the boys' singles ended when Tom Farquharson, a wildcard entry, lost 6-3, 6-4 to No3 seed Bernard Tomic, the Australian who reached the second round of his home grand slam in January.
